Kate Manire, Director of College Advising
When Mina and Dev, twins in their junior year, first approached us at Testive, they had an ambitious goal: apply to highly competitive Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) programs. Not only were they aiming for selective schools, but they also faced a daunting essay load, with over 10 applications each and little idea where to begin on their personal statements and supplemental essays.
Initial Strategy and Brainstorming
To kick off, we began with a comprehensive intake session, allowing me to uncover each twin’s strengths and experiences. From this, I curated unique themes for both. Mina, passionate about American Sign Language (ASL), had not only learned it but had taught it to others. Her personal statement uncovered the “why’ of Mina’s passion for ASL, showcasing empathy and communication skills essential for a career in healthcare. Meanwhile, Dev drew on his humor and compassion, crafting a standout narrative around his volunteer work at a nursing home. His essay highlighted how he connected with residents, humorously framing them as some of his best friends.\
Essay Templates and Customization
With an aggressive application list that included Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern, and Villanova, Mina and Dev needed efficient, targeted essays. I created personalized essay “templates” for each of them, which allowed them to tweak their responses effectively for each school’s unique prompts. From crafting distinct “Why DO” essays to addressing their most meaningful activities, every application received a tailored approach while maintaining each twin’s authentic voice and experiences.
Results
Both Mina and Dev’s applications were a resounding success—they were accepted into nine out of the ten programs they applied to, including highly selective schools like Northeastern, GWU, Boston College, Boston University, and Villanova. Their thoughtful, well-structured essays, combined with Testive’s guidance, highlighted their individual strengths and passions, setting them apart as outstanding candidates for selective DO programs.
